Beachguy, yes, in the silence we can find peace. But only when we have personal contentment that comes from acknowledgment of divine things and obedience to Wisdom. With that in mind, music can be merely a distraction, or, a doorway to heavenly things. May music always provide you with inspiration! Hey ben , I will tell you a story , once upon a time in my life I needed sound to sleep or relax but I then learned to understand me in the stillness , to live with myself in completely myself , to hear my breathing , to fear nothing , to be in complete control of the void of nothing , I do not acknowledgment divine thoughts but that is just me , do they play bingo in heaven ?? , my inspirations come from Mother Nature . thanks for thoughts

She is best heard (and acknowledged) in the stillness.
Bingo? Why not? As long as someone will play it with you!

Ron. Being a life long fan of Sam Clemens as well, I'm sure we'll find something in common to agree on .. and disagree on. My dad introduced me to him at bedtime long ago when he'd read my brother and I to sleep; leaving us to dream about paddling down the Mississippi on a raft we'd clobbered up from logs and scrap lumber. Much later I visited his home in Hartford where I was brought to tears hearing the story of how his daughter Susy died there of meningitis, alone, while he and Livy were traveling Europe trying to make enough money from lectures to stave off bankruptcy. Not long ago my wife and I explored Calaveras County several times where he was inspired to write about Jumping Frogs. A very off-the-beaten-path part of California. Met and talked for a long time with a local guy who you could believe was Twain's reincarnation. John.

Ben. Back to Jackie for a bit.
A few years ago an old friend came back into my life and the reunion was profoundly effecting and often moving for both of us. On one occasion she and I attended Mass, the first time in many years for her. A daily Mass, so there were few people. At the Our Father, I took her hand, and as we recited it together she began to tear up and then weep. She shook ...... she was so deeply moved. By what? That old prayer? My taking her hand? Whatever it was, she wouldn't acknowledge it to me. I don't think she knew, in fact. But her life began to profoundly change for the better soon after. Years of psycho-therapy had had little positive effect on her, focused as it was not on where the problems originated but her emotions and psychology. To paraphrase the great psychologist Carl Jung, all psychological problems originate in the soul. The soul. That immortal part of us where love is born, resides and seeks to find reunion with its creator.
I tell you this story because what attracted me about Jackie Evancho was the effect "her song" had on me .... and many others. I was brought to tears by it. Not once, but often. Tears of joy? Tears I can't explain. But maybe because of my long years and the many encounters I've had over them with matters of the soul, I recognized Jackie's voice was touching it. That immortal part of me where love resides and is given away in order to be love.
So there's more, in my humble opinion, to the Jackie Evancho phenomenon than the novelty of a mature and exquisite singing voice projecting from a 10 or 14 years immature body. But what is it?
In all my years of loving music, struggling to play it, sing it, or just enjoying and reveling in its sound I have never personally or deeply cared about an artist. Jackie Evancho .... I care about. And I think there are many many others like me around the around world that feel the same. Why is that?

John, I cannot disagree with you about Miss Evancho. The reference I made about "novelty" had more to do with the fickle attribute of the public more than it does Jackie. Although her voice is incredibly beautiful to many, it was her young age, along with her innate talent, that astonished the public, in the beginning. So in time, her audience must revel in more than the initial anomaly.
Your friend reminds me of myself a few years ago. Her emotional interludes during the Mass was much like my own, and it has been described by the followers of the Kaballah as "mystical weeping." As we begin to be transformed by the alchemy of the Holy Eucharist or Mass, some of us break out in tears in gratitude for, and anticipation of, a great consummation with our Greatest Love.
Yes, there is much more to the phenomenon many are experiencing by listening to Miss Evancho. But unfortunately, many listeners idolize the medium who brings a message instead of acknowledging its Origin. Fans are not aware of why a singer moves them so and start worshipping the instrument. They do not see that a catharsis is only the first step in a great healing of the soul that is needed----a healing that can only come from our Divine Source.
Therefore, the great voice of Miss Evancho's can serve as a spiritual awakening for many. Her voice tells a story about our soul and its longing for fulfillment. This fulfillment depends upon a union of the lover and the beloved. The union of the soul with God.
Happy to know you are a reader of Carl Jung. If we use his analytical psychology, and terminology, we might say that Jackie Evancho, and her voice, constellate powerful archetypes within the human psyche.
On a personal note, it was Jung who led me to the tradition of the "Gnosis" for which I am eternally grateful...
The kingdom we seek is truly within, and I fervently pray for all who have yet to know God's love.
May the voice, and humble countenance, of a lovely young woman, help bring the human race closer to ultimate fulfillment!

Cool , I really liked his books on Audio , I unlike most did not read as a youngster so hearing them was just great , the story teller bring it home right to your ears and lets you close your eyes and image it all , I need to tell you a story when I got here in the south

And I think there are many many others like me around the around world that feel the same. Why is that? John Well John , I in my first few weeks of watching Jackie I was the same way , then I said to my self "'you better pull yourself together for you are getting carried away which is not good " I calmed down after that , the easy answer to WHY ? is your body subconsciously releases a stress hormone called Adrenaline which is from the feeling of strong emotions , tears and goose-bumps can come together and it seems to affect men more then women which is other subject , I had entered some research programs from a couple mental health hospitals working with physiologists which I found so very interesting as the workings of the mind is endless and I can tell you from my journey into deep deep Real depression which I was 24 hours away from taking my life, the answer to your mind being right is in the correct balance of chemicals producing the very complexity workings of the mind , there must be balance and there are countless millions of people unbalanced but don't now it and hoping , wishing , praying , can not correct balance change if it indeed is Real Depression . regard Ron , been there

Re: Getting carried away
Until we become fully conscious of something deep within, we are vulnerable to outward things in a seductive way. We are likely to become emotionally attached to people, things, and/or ideas that remind us of that "something" within.
And because external things we become attached to, are temporary in nature, when removed, the result is most often great suffering. Whereas, that which is deep within, is of a spiritual nature, and, thus is permanent. A reconciliation, or, union with spirit ends suffering. It is the spirit which is the origin of all things and most worthy of our devotion. Without it and the wholeness it provides, we cannot navigate in this world in a healthy way, with ourselves and our fellow man. With it, we are in communion with all, and find it no longer necessary to grieve when outward events change, but rather only in witness to the ignorance or evil of humanity.

Rather deep sir ben as we are but humble pirates , I blame the Entertainment Industry for most of the Evil of humanity of show-biz , I as a adult can not or will not engage but a very little like Jackie or the like as Society continues to decline to the pits of doom and no spirit will change it , only physical minds imo

Rather deep sir ben as we are but humble pirates Agreed Nice to see some civilised discussion, but I fear we are straying into realms best avoided on a music forum. Thanks Ben, John and Ron for your contributions. You are welcome to continue your discussion privately, but I feel it is time to draw a line under it on the public forum.

Thanks Ben, John and Ron for your contributions. You are welcome to continue your discussion privately, but I feel it is time to draw a line under it on the public forum. Deep conversations are not welcome in many places publicly. This is a great loss to some of us, because the subject of music deserves depth.
But if this is contrary to the policy of this forum, I will honor your decision to forbid it.
