Evancho takes fans to the movies13-year-old singer to perform 'Songs from Silver Screen' with Oregon SymphonyBy Alan Sculley for The Columbian Published: November 29, 2013, 6:00 AM So far in her young singing career, 13-year-old Jackie Evancho has made her mark singing the decidedly adult style of classical crossover music. That doesn't mean she hasn't encountered some people who wanted to steer her toward more of a pop style of singing. Considering Evancho's age, pop might seem like the more obvious style for her to pursue. "Sometimes record producers say they want this (different thing)," Evancho said in a phone interview. "A lot of them want more of a pop sound. But that's not me." What feels right, Evancho said, is classical crossover. "I don't know why it's my natural way of singing. It just kind of ended up being that way," she said. "I guess it's because it's the type of music that they performed in 'The Phantom of the Opera,' the movie, and I just loved it so much and still do. And classical crossover music to me is very unique. It's different and that's why I love it so much. I love very unique things, plus my vocal sounds awful in pop." Concert review by Bonnie Anne Hudson Pinard... www.facebook.com/SwansongBonnie/posts/10151899731509064"Some of you might be surprised to learn that despite the fact that I love the performing arts and am a singer myself, I have never been to a world class concert performed by a world class artist-until last night! My 2 friends and I went last night to the amazing Jackie Evancho concert. From the first note the Portland Symphony played before she even came out on stage, I started wiping the tears! It's one thing to sit at home and listen to orchestral music, but it's quite another to listen to a symphony orchestra live. Just the sound of those instruments moved me so much that by the time Jackie quietly stepped onto the stage, I was already emotionally invested. As some of you know I started following Ms Evancho's career before she even had one, via youtube videos. I first discovered her video of a talent show performance of Wishing You Were Somehow Here again. She was around 7 or 8 years old at that time. I subscribed to her channel and would often visit over the next few years to see what she was up to. Then in 2009 when she became a contestant on America's Got Talent, I never missed a performance via my television, and like many others out there in TV land, I was stunned and deeply moved by her historical performance of Pie Jesu. Jackie was a a little girl when she competed on AGT and came in second, but last night as she walked out onto the stage, the little girl was gone and a young teenager stood there in a beautiful sparkling blue gown. Poised and fully engaged with the audience, Jackie was the consummate artist. Any concerns I may have had about how she would transition vocally from a little girl into a young woman were assuaged by her stunning performance. She was relaxed and confident as she sang her way through a repertoire of tracks from her CDs and Christmas songs. She seemed in complete control over her instrument and although she is still growing, her lungs have matured enough to afford her the wind power she may have lacked during the AGT competition. However, she used this new power sparingly and never over sang or pushed her vocals. She is a very dynamic performer both vocally and in terms of her musical artistry. Her voice is capable of soaring or whispering a song lyric, and I was enthralled by every moment. Jackie is not just a singer but an interpreter of songs, in much the same way as Barbra Streisand or Frank Sinatra. What I mean by that is that even at her young age, Jackie has the ability to communicate a song lyric through her own unique style of phrasing and delivery. She takes time with the lyric as she tells the song's story and conveys a level of emotion uncanny for a girl of her age. This is a rare gift and one that must be seen live to be appreciated. I own all of Jackie's CDs and while I enjoy them, nothing compares to seeing her perform with ones own eyes. She is pitch perfect. I never heard one stray note. Not even slightly off. Her voice is a cross between an angelic boys choir and Sarah Brightman's. It is not operatic and it is not POP. It is indeed Classical Crossover but it is something more than that. Hard to put into words. I was pleased that the program was paced between Jackie and the orchestra, which allowed her moments of vocal rest between sets. She did not sing too many songs and left the audience wanting more when she finally wished us goodnight after 2 encores. I will never forget the peace, the sense of awe and enjoyment she blessed me with last night, and I feel so honored to have been in that audience. Prior to the concert, my friends and I joined other Jackie fans that had come from all over the region for dinner at a near by restaurant. It was lovely meeting a few people I've gotten acquainted with via facebook and Twitter, especially Kim Lariviere-Baldelliand Becky Kiesel. What a magical and unforgettable night!"

bruceh's review:
"This was a magficent concert at a very beautiful concert hall in downtown Portland OR. Several fans (someone counted 38) met for the fan gathering at restuarant across from the venue. Initally we were going to try our hand at the Cup Song but ended up singing You Are My Sunshine (likely a better choice). That was recorded. The Oregon Symphony Orchestra opened the concert with a couple of outsanding pieces but I don't know what they were. Then Jackie took the stage in a stunning light blue chiffon gown with sequens on top.
`1. Orchestra - Unknown 2. Lovers 3. When You Wish Upon A Star 4. Imaginer 5. Orchestra - Unknown 6. To Where You Are - Piano 7. Ombra Mai Fu 8. The Lords Prayer
After The Lord's Prayer, Jackie returned to the stage wearing a dazzling black gown with sequens on the top and bottom. It looked very similar to THE DRESS.
Becky Keisel suggested that after Jackie finished the first song of her second set that we all stand and make the heart sign, which we did and she smiled. She pours her heart out, so we just wanted to let her know that what she gives is very much appreciated.
Second set:
9. Orchestra - Nutcracker 10. My Heart Will Go On 11. O Mio Babbino Caro 12. The Music Of The Night 13. Orchestra - Angels We Have Heard On High 14. Orchestra - Unknown 15. White Christmas 16. O Holy Night 17. Encore 1: Walking in the Air 18. Encore 2: Believ
There were several standing o's primarily from those in the first few rows. There were very few seats that were not filled. Full house standing o's after her last song. I think just about everyone was on their feet giving loud applause and shouting, "Encore!!" No one was going to let her get away that easily. She returned to the stage for another song, Walking in the Air.
After WITA, another standing O She returned once again and did a heart-felt rendition of Believe. Then another standing O. Jackie wished everyone a Merry Christmas and flashed her captivating smile at the audience. Several shouted, "Merry Christmas to you, Jackie."
Lots of eye contact and smiles throughout her magnificent performance. When you're front row center and she looks at you and smiles, it's heart warming. Her stage presence and audience interaction is phenonenal, so regardless of where you're sitting, you've got a great seat.
I had 46 souvenier buttons and gave away most of them. The few I had remaining I gave to a few of the kids in the audience, who were most grateful. She didn't bring any kids on stage with her as we were hoping she would.
There was a wide variety of age groups there, as well as several women, and several younger children, many in the 8-10 yo range. I asked one girl, about 9 yo I'd guess, if she enjoyed the concert. She said she did so I gave her a button. She and her mother both smiled.
The venue was very strict about pics and videos. One or two audience members were busted by the ushers for taking video.
The Oregon Symphony Orchestra was magnficent and didn't overpower her and some orchestras have. You could see by the expressions on their faces that they also very much were enjoying her performance.
It was a magical evening and one I will always treasure. Besides Jackie's wonderful performance, it was also a chance to meet some great Jackie fans, some of whom I'd met before, but also some I'd just talked to online but hadn't met."

fantabulosa's review: Just a few comments. This is the first time being in the front row, and consequently I lost count of the eye-to-eye smiles from Jackie! I hate to admit it, but it makes you feel like an excited little girl, LOL. DaveM lent his Jackie Ghost Bride tie to me, and he wore his PTAD era one with her beautifully posed in front of a tree. When Jackie first came out on stage, the ties caught her attention, and she returned the warmest expression of amusement to both of us.
The orchestra was nothing short of perfect. Balanced, absolutely in tune, and both smooth as silk and powerfully dynamic as the music, and John Mario, called for.
Fashion comment: Jackie wore a simple pair of low black heels with her beautiful blue gown, and rather ornate, and higher, heels with her stunning black gown. She commented how the higher heels made her taller as she adjusted her mic stand for the second set. I unfortunately was looking away when she adjusted her mic, but hearing that she did brought to mind two times during her pre-AGT era when someone had to help her with that.
Which reminds me, during her performance of O Mio Babbino Caro, I struggled to catch even a glimmer of the little girl in the red dress, but I couldn't. Still, I was just as awestruck that this IS the same girl. I was overwhelmed with a sense of living history. She has come such a long way in just a few short years!
I was thrilled to death to hear four songs that I'd never heard her sing in concert. White Christmas, Walking in the Air and Believe were unexpected treats, and she sang them all beautifully, as she did all the other songs of the evening.
Speaking of Jackie's voice, I was impressed by how much more mature and powerful it is since I last heard her in Las Vegas (where her voice and the acoustics in Reynolds Hall left me melted into my seat). More than any other time I've seen her, I found myself fighting back tears. The few minor things she has yet to overcome, she will overcome because that's what she does. I felt a comforting sense of optimism about her future. I honestly felt like I was seeing and hearing the adult Jackie emerging.
A few miscellaneous observations. Many in the orchestra applauded her by hand (rather than the customary bow tapping). The concertmaster, who appeared to be quite taken by Jackie, may have set the example for this, as he applauded often.
I loved the lighting. I would guess that the lighting effects were the work of the venue's own lighting person; kudos to him or her for their creative work.
It was good to see and chat with familiar fans and meet new ones. I also loved having Dave spend Thanksgiving at my home, and driving down with him from north of Seattle. All-in-all, it was a wonderful concert experience.

"The Portland concert was for me the most enjoyable of Jackie's concerts, so far. Two weeks earlier, in San Rafael, I sat in the first row, near center, for the first time. I didn't think it could get any better than that. Spoiled rotten now, forever, I was. Had Row E for this one. Five rows back...good heavens, that's practically in the suburbs, I thought. Really only bought this ticket because after I went to the Baltimore concert last May it was the only West Coast concert scheduled. Yep, should have just waited for the California concerts. Well...Fate does me a good turn every once in a while. I am so grateful now for that wonderful evening in Portland. This concert even surpassed my previous favorite, last December's in Costa Mesa, to which it bears many similarities. Jackie sang wonderfully and I was pleased to see the return of some of her most endearing mannerisms: the thumbs-up gesture, double wave, demure shoulder shrug, even a giggle or two. And she was grabbing handfuls of her dress with her left hand. I love it when she does that. It means she's really throwing herself into a song. (Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see her pick up her dress with her thumb and forefinger. I saw her do that in San Rafael. That gesture is recorded most famously, I think, in the One Drop rehearsal video) I was pleasantly surprised she opened with Lovers, as she did in the first concert of hers I ever attended. Tissue Time? The first line she sang. Tears rolled down my checks, just like that woman shown close-up, one minute into the video, during Pie Jesu at David Foster and Friends. I don't even anticipate the big notes anymore in songs like Imaginer or MOTN. I find myself fixated on the way she works every line masterfully and doesn't seem to have to reach for the big notes. I noticed this as well during Impossible Dream at the previous concert. A continuing fine-tuning of her repertoire. To Where You Are gave me goosebumps and is easing its way into my top favorites. A very friendly woman sitting to my left said, "You seem to be a big fan of Jackie" I wonder what tipped her off. My handful of tissues? Trying to buy a ticket for Indio with my phone during intermission? My second big surprise was hearing OMBC and MOTN so early in the evening. At this point I'm thrown completely off-balance. I don't know what's coming up next. My mind is addled, and I'm loving it! O Holy Night--during this, I swore to myself that I had never heard anything so beautiful. But what now? She's already sung the songs she usually sings for encores. For an instant I worried that maybe she doesn't do encores anymore. Kept me guessing; but Walking in the Air and Believe were wonderful. Kudos to the orchestra and John Mario, who were indeed brilliant. I would very much like to return to Portland the next time Jackie performs there."
