Scales, albeit of the musical variety, are no problem for vocal phenomenon Jackie Evancho.
It was roughly five years ago when the Pittsburgh native started taking singing lessons and competing in vocal competitions. Eventually the amazing soprano ended up on the fifth season of “America’s Got Talent,” where she was named runner-up.
“I think that experience was great and sometimes I wish I could do it again,” said Jackie, calling from her Steel City home. “It was so much fun. There was a lot of work that went into it but I’m glad I was on that show because now I’m working my way up and becoming what I always wanted to be.”
There’s one particular experience Jackie had on “America’s Got Talent” that has become commonplace. After performing aria “O mio babbino caro,” some viewers questioned whether it was a lip-synced performance. Naturally it wasn’t, and the following evening she sang in an impromptu fashion to show off her range. But the point is many musical scholars and fans have a hard time wrapping their heads around Jackie’s talents.
This has been the universal reaction after her four studio albums (that’s right, this 12-year-old has released four full-length CDs in three years). Not only was her 2010 debut EP, “O Holy Night,” the best-selling debut record with sales of 1 million units and a platinum certification that year, but her 2011 studio effort “Dream With Me” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200 charts and went gold after only four weeks. Other albums include 2011’s “Heavenly Christmas,” as well as last year’s “Songs From The Silver Screen.” She also appeared twice on PBS’s “Great Performances.”
During her relatively short time in the spotlight, the operatic soprano has found a home recording an eclectic mix of genres from opera and show tunes to pop songs. Her diverse repertoire will be on display when Jackie brings her second solo headlining tour to Cleveland Friday for a show at the Palace Theatre.
When asked whether she enjoys being on stage alone or performing with others, the precocious singer offers insight into what it’s like being a child prodigy.
“I think it’s a bit easier because I can kind of just be me and relax,” Jackie said. “Also, people won’t judge me saying, ‘What’s she doing, trying to steal the show?’”
Performing for Jackie apparently includes acting. Naturally as a talented tween artist there was the obligatory appearance on a Disney Channel show (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) but she also jumped to more credible work in the form of the recently released feature film “The Company You Keep,” in which Robert Redford starred and directed.
“Robert Redford was channel surfing and came across my PBS special,” said Jackie, who admitted initially she had never heard of Robert Redford. “He felt that I was someone who could be directed. Basically within a few weeks I was on the set.”
While Jackie said she enjoys acting, singing is her first love. However, she’s hoping to avoid being pigeonholed. In fact, it sounds like she even has an independent, Miranda Lambert-esque streak in her.
“For my birthday I got a dirt bike and a crossbow,” Jackie said. “It was really cool.”
In talking about summer, after she performs with Tony Bennett later this month, she’ll be taking off the rest of June and all of July. You’ll never guess what Jackie has planned for her summer vacation.
“Just swimming and fishing,” Jackie said.
Talk about defying expectations, it’s the latter that paints the often ballroom gown-wearing Jackie as, well, a fish out of water. It turns out while she may be fearless when it comes to the cutthroat music industry, she’s afraid of taking the fish off the hook.
She laughed, “I love fishing but I’m scared the scales are going to cut me.”
