Song Selections for Jackie

I made this post in Jackie's forum, but since you have to be a member to view it, I thought I would put it in a more public place:
This list isn't something to make an album out of, it's to cherry pick any song that might be suitable for any project or concept album that may be planned. I don't really need to put forward classics or standards - everybody knows what they are already. The CC audience are people who like to be safe and know where they stand. But I don't think albums should be made entirely of them - I think they should be used as a gateway to new material, so the genre doesn't become stagnated. An album doesn't need anymore than 4 standards on it in my humble opinion. That's enough to make the typical audience pick it up and feel like they know what they're buying.
Here it is:
I have been working on this for a while since I saw this thread. I have considered all of these very carefully and have taken into account Jackie's age, vocal style and the American market.
If her record company approached me and asked for a longlist of songs to record, this would be my reply:
Standards (i):
I Believe (Eric Levi) Katherine Jenkins & Andrea Bocelli version
Papa Can You Hear Me (ii) (Michel Legrand) Charlotte Church's version
Nearer My God To Thee (Sarah Flower Adams) Piano Guys version
Notes:
i) standards sure can be boring, and even more so if you are a big fan off CC music, as many artists will have covered them. However, a selection of standards is commercially fundamental for an album on a major label.
ii) covering songs already recorded by Charlotte Church... I think this would have been a problem five years ago, but it's been long enough now and Charlotte herself has moved on to indie/rock music. Many Jackie fans are new to classical crossover and won't have Charlotte's recordings anyway.
Regular CC covers:
Goodnight My Angel (Billy Joel) Celtic Woman's version
Benedictus (Karl Jenkins) Hayley Westenra's version
Rare CC covers (i):
Instrument Of Peace (Olivia Newton John) Canadian Tenors version
Song to the Siren (ii) (Tim Buckley) Alfie Boe's version
From A Distance (Bette Midler) Becky Jane Taylor's Version
Halo (iii) (Beyonce) Listen
Titanium (iv) (David Guetta/Sia) Madilyn Bailey's version
Sanvean (v) (Dead Can Dance) Sarah Brightman's version
I Know You By Heart (vi) (Eva Cassidy) Listen
Dark Waltz (vii) (Hayley Wesntera) Listen
Abigail's Song (Murrey Gold) Katherine Jenkins version
Vespera (Libera) Listen
Power of Love (Frankie Goes To Hollywood) Gabrielle Aplin's version
Don't Cry Alone (viii) (Robin Gibb) Mary-Jess version
Lighthouse of Mine (ix) (Mary-Jess Leaverland) Listen
Earth Song (x) (Michael Jackson) Sisca's version
Kindness (Sisca Birgitta) Listen
Hope (Sisca Birgitta) Listen
Tears of an Angel (RyanDan) Listen
No One Like You (Jerry Goldsmith/David Zippel) Sarah Brightman's version
You Are My Miracle/Il Mio Miracolo (xi) (G F Pintus) Vittorio Grigolo's version
Sei Tu Non Sei Lei (xii) (Daniel Bedingfield) Vittorio Grigolo's version
Notes:
i) this basically means that these songs have been tried and tested in the CC arena, however, they've only been done once or twice, either by obscure artists, obscure albums, or songs that I've heard as an editor but the tracks have not been released. It means that these could be covered, and still be considered an unusual track selection or innovative.
ii) I have this song sung so, so beautifully by a CC soprano, and the arrangement superb. Unfortunately, it's unreleased and always will be. Alfie Boe released what I think is a poor version last year.
iii) Heard this by a CC soprano, and it was amazing. Unfortunately, it's unreleased.
iv) Mary-Jess has covered this during live performances, but it hasn't been recorded as of yet. Linked to an acoustic version.
v) Lisa Gerrard is behind Dead Can Dance (the vocalist from the Gladiator soundtrack). Her version is amazing. Sarah Brightman covered it, but in my opinion, Sarah simply made a "pretty" version. I think Jackie could do so much more emotively with this track.
vi) I feel very strongly that Jackie should cover this because of her interpretation skills. This has become a regular on Hayley Westenra's live set, but she still hasn't recorded it.
vii) I know Jackie covered this on PTAD, but a recent recording would do it more justice.
viii) from his last album before he died, Robin Gibb (one of the Bee Gees brothers) composed this for the Titanic Remembrance. Mary-Jess sings it at her live shows, but hasn't recorded it yet. It's stunning.
ix) Mary-Jess won 2011's Album of the Year at CCUK. Her album is full of her own songs. Whilst this isn't, in my opinion, her strongest, its lyrics and message would suit Jackie's emotive vocal style. This song is a favourite among Mary-Jess's fans. Unfortunately, I can't find a link to the studio recording.
x) I've suggested three songs from Sisca. One a cover of Michael Jackson, and the other two her original songs. She has a very similar vocal style to Jackie and she sings about things that I think Jackie cares about. Sisca is an indie artist and nobody (other than regulars of CCUK) know who she is so they will be original tracks for everyone else. There are others, but they are heavy in environmentalism and may not be politically compatible with an American audience.
xi) there is an English version of this with Katherine Jenkins singing it as a duet with Vittorio Grigolo
xii) original pop song a number one hit in the UK - Jonathan Ansell, a tenor, recorded an English version too.
Original:
In the Blink of an Eye (i) (Michael Tauben) Listen
Notes:
i) this has been written and recorded, but it hasn't been released. It's used as a showcase for the vocalists voice, but not much more. The thing is, it's a pretty amazing song. I only ever hear great feedback from it, and I myself absolutely love it.
Film:
All Love Can Be (James Horner) - A Beautiful Mind Charlotte Church's version
Vide Cor Meum (Patrick Cassidy) - Hannibel/Kingdom of Heaven Katherine Jenkins version
Here I Am (Bryan Adams) - Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron Listen
Into the West (Howard Shore/Annie Lennox) - Lord of the Rings Listen
Perfect Day (Miriam Stockley) - Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit series Listen
Kindle My Heart (Patrick Doyle) - A Little Princess Listen
Did I Make the Most of Loving You (John Lunn/Don Black) - Downton Abbey Mary-Jess version
Game Music (i):
Prelude (ii) (Nobuo Uematsu) Kanon's version
Aerith's Theme (iii) (Nobuo Uematsu) Listen
Eyes On Me (iv) (Faye Wong) Listen
Eternity - Memories of Lightwaves (Noriko Matsueda/Takahito Eguch) Listen
Notes:
i) You want to broaden your audience? Get down with the youngsters and get engaged with some classical music they don't even realise they love and listen to. GAME music. I cannot stress enough that covering music from computer games is not only beautiful, but a stroke of masterful commerical manipulation. Do not think for a second that this music is inferior - it's full of hidden gems. This audience are on the internet - their games are on the internet, and they are in groups of hundreds of thousands on forums, and in groups of millions ingame. They are INSTANTLY interested when their favourite games' music has been recorded and they spread the word like wild fire. See Lindsey Stirling for case in point who has enjoyed over 186 million youtube views after covering many gaming songs. Skyrim came out this year. Her Skyrim video has over 14 million views. Her Assassins Creed III video has over 2 million hits - only came out in November. Did I mention she's an independent artist? Nope, she's not signed. I'm not a gamer, so I don't know the music that well, apart from the Final Fantasy series.
ii) Nobuo Uematsu is a massive star in Japan. Resident composer for Squaresoft for over 20 years he is one of the most established names in the gaming community. In 2011 he paired up with a Japanese CC artist, Kanon, and released a vocal collaboration album with him. "Prelude" is the opening track not just for the album, but for the whole of the Final Fantasy series.
iii) this is one of the most famous themes and most loved (and to put in context, the music comes from a scene in the game that was innovative in a story line based game at the time - the main character died before even half way through the game - it makes many grown men cry). I wonder to myself that it hasn't been covered because Uematsu doesn't allow it to be, because fans would flock to it if it were vocally covered.
iv) if Jackie ever needs a bonus track for the Japanese market - this one would be a good choice!
Christmas (i):
Christmas Dreams (ii) (Angelzoom) Listen
My December (iii) (Linkin Park) Josh Groban's version
Corpus Christi Carol (iv) (traditional) Hayley Westenra's version
Where Are You Christmas? (James Horner/Will Jennings) Faith Hill's version
Notes:
i) I genuinely hope that Jackie doesn't release yet another Christmas album, but if she does, then I hope the tracklist can be a little cooler and current. Previous ones are standard and traditional covers typical of the American Christmas market. Sells, I'm sure, but if she ever feels like releasing an crimbo album elsewhere...
ii) Nobody knows this song, or this group exists. Totally obscure that covering it is basically originating it.
iii) this is kind of obscure. Kind of. Linkin Park released this only as a bonus track on certain editions. Josh Groban covered it, but also hid it as a bonus track on one edition of a live concert album. Linkin Park and Groban are massive, but the nature of which they recorded this actually makes it quite unknown at large. Scala & the Kolacny Brothers (a CC choir) finally gave it a place it deserves by making it the first track on their latest album and naming the album after it but I don't think America is too familiar with them. It's slightly risky, as it's quite dark, but I think for an older Jackie, this could draw in new audiences.
iv) not the "cool" and "current" theme I spoke of above, but this carol is from the UK and is a stunner - it's not that well known in the US.
Showtunes:
Our Kind Of Love (i) (Andrew Lloyd Webber) No youtube videos
Lift the Wings (Bill Whelen) Listen
Notes:
i) This comes from an obscure musical by ALW, called The Beautiful Game, which didn't have much success. This tune, however, will be recognisable to all, as ALW recycled the music for Love Never Dies. I chose this version as I think the lyrics are more age appropriate, and because it's less known, would make the selection a little more unusual.
Pop covers (i):
To You I Belong (ii) (B*Witched) Listen
The Voice Within (Christina Aguilera) Listen
Read All About It (part III) (Emili Sande) Listen
Sing (iii) (Gary Barlow) Listen
Roots Before Branches (Room For Two) Listen
Hands (Jewel) Listen
Somewhere Only We Know (Keane) Laura Michelle Kelly's version
Breathe (iv) (Sixpence None the Richer) Listen
Sinking Friendships (Jonsi) Listen
Flying Without Wings (Westlife) Listen
Notes:
i) pop songs that I think would suit a CC make over, but hasn't been attempted yet.
ii) this was a brief number one single in the late nineties that has been totally forgotten - it has a celtic twist, and it's actually about the relationship between mother and daughter. I think it's achingly appropriate for Jackie.
iii) written for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, this song is without copyright as they wanted everyone to cover it on youtube and release their own versions.
iv) a Christian pop song, which is so beautiful and honest. I think Jackie would like it.
Rock covers (i):
Lost in Paradise (Amy Lee/Evanescence) Listen
My Immortal (Amy Lee/Evanescence) Affinití's version
Memories (ii) (Within Temptation) Listen
Our Farewell (Within Temptation) Listen
Bittersweet (Within Temptation) Listen
Notes:
i) basically, in Central Europe, there's a music movement called Symphonic Metal. It translates almost perfectly into what American's understand Evanescence to be. There are bands, with sopranos as their vocalists, and who use orchestra for their arrangements, that are very, very close to the CC border indeed. Obviously, when they do their metal thing, this will be too heavy for the average CC fan. But when these bands do a BALLAD, then it's ON! They are amazing, amazing songs. Any ballads by Nightwish, Evanescence and Within Temptation can and should be explored by all CC artists. They can be quite gothic, but only as much as Phantom of the Opera is. Some CC artists have already touched on this. I know Toni Gibson has recorded some Tarja Turunen tracks (ex lead singer from Nightwish) though have not yet been released, Samantha Link and Gregorian have done Within Temptation, and Gregorian have even done Nightwish. Sarah Brightman's Symphony album was clearly inspired by Within Temptation (Fleurs Du Mal sounds identical to the sound of their third album The Silent Force).
ii) Within Temptation songs are quite narrative - since Jackie is so good at telling stories with her singing, I think they'd suit her, despite them being quite mature in content (similar to how she told "Lovers")
Classical covers (i):
Sonatina (ii) (Muzio Clement) Listen
A Window to the Past (John Williams) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Listen
Notes:
i) classical pieces that need a bit of adapting and creativity, but would work beautifully as a CC song.
ii) this tune should be instantly recognisable as 'Groovy Kind of Love' - fantastic and medlodic piece of music, but the lyrics are jarring - I think it should be given a CC makeover and with completely new lyrics that doesn't involve the word "groovy".
iii) to entice the Harry Potter market and because it's stunning.
Misc:
Prism of Life (i) (Enigma) Listen
Notes:
i) One of the most incredible pieces of music ever - so beautiful, so relaxing. The lyrics are religious. The format and arrangement is far removed from a vocal solo piece (though there's a bit in the middle) but if it could be re-worked somehow, I think it would become a CC standard.
This list isn't something to make an album out of, it's to cherry pick any song that might be suitable for any project or concept album that may be planned. I don't really need to put forward classics or standards - everybody knows what they are already. The CC audience are people who like to be safe and know where they stand.
