Classical music superstar Katherine Jenkins will join José Carreras on stage in a world first at Preston Guild, the Evening Post can exclusively reveal.
The Welsh mezzo-soprano will perform at a huge open-air concert, Proms in the Park, in what is set to be one of the highlights of Guild Week.
The two-hour show at Avenham Park on Friday, September 7, will be the first time Jenkins and Spanish tenor José have sung together and it is expected to attract fans from across the country.
Katherine, 31, said: “I’m really looking forward to taking to the stage with José at Preston Proms. It’s the first time we’ve performed together on stage and I cannot wait. I hope fans are as excited as I am.”
Diva Katherine, who has sold seven million records worldwide, has recently enjoyed huge success in America, where she is one of the finalists on Dancing with the Stars, the hit the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.
Katherine has also been a mentor on ITV1’s Popstar To Operastar programme and her crossover pop-opera style has been credited with helping to bring classical music to a younger audience.
José, who sang with Placido Domingo and the late Luciano Pavarotti as part of the Three Tenors, had confirmed earlier this year he will sing at the Guild date, his first UK concert in three years.
The pair will perform together at a 10,000-capacity outdoor amphitheatre at the historic park, a day before the G-Volution urban, dance and indie festival packs out the same venue. The opera superstars will be supported by conductor David Gimenez and the 62-piece Manchester Camerata Orchestra.
Chris Haylett, who is producing the Proms event, said: “It’s a world exclusive and amazing for the people of Preston.
“Katherine and José are both at the top of their profession and we can expect some great stuff.
“They will sing their own repertoires, they will be duetting and finishing with fireworks.
“It promises to be something very special.”
Tickets, priced £65, will be available to people living in Preston area PR1 to PR5 postcodes first, before they go on general sale.
People in those areas can buy tickets from 10am on Tuesday May 29 until 5pm on Wednesday May 30 from 0845 344 2012 or by calling into the Box Office at the Guild Hall.
They will then go on general release next Thursday over the phone and from.prestonguild2012.com or www.prestonguildhall.com.
Stella Hall, festival director of Preston Guild, said: “This is such a coup for the Guild to have two global stars sing together on stage for the first time ever.
“We are absolutely thrilled that Katherine has agreed to perform at the concert and this will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those that are present.”
The line-up for the G-Volution Festival has still be announced but promoters have promised some leading names from the contemporary music scene.
