As I do not live in the part of the US where PBS television showed Mario's Boston Pops Orchestra concert, I was extremely disappointed. I wasn't going to wait and see if and when the DVD would be sold to the public. So I contacted WGBH the PBS station in Boston where the concert was filmed. I purchased the DVD three weeks ago and I received it today. It really was a 'Beautiful Things' concert. Mario sang all the songs on the album, which I know so well after playing it constantly for a year! The DVD comes with a very nice booklet with photos. Stephan Moccio accompanied Mario on piano to 'The Face' and 'Beautiful Thing's, both of which he composed. Hayley sang the duet 'A Hero is Inside' instead of Vanessa Williams. George Perris sang the duet 'Maria' instead of Vittorio Grigolo. Alkistis Protopsalti sang the duet 'Rojo Violento' as it is in the album. All three guest stars sang a solo.
Hayley sang another duet with Mario, Naturaleza Muerta. I did not like this duet. Maybe because I am accustomed to Mario singing it solo or maybe the song is so sad, I didn't feel it was meant to be sung as a duet. There are bonus tracks and interviews which I haven't watched yet. Hayley sang another duet with Mario, Naturaleza Muerta. I did not like this duet. Maybe because I am accustomed to Mario singing it solo or maybe the song is so sad, I felt it was meant to be solo. Mario also sang his signature 'Vincero Perdero' and 'Here's to the Hero's'. There are bonus tracks and interviews which I haven't watched yet. I received a link to a PBS station which supposedly had the DVD for sale in extremely limited quantities, you had to purchase in 72 hours of the announcement. It was $46.00. So far, no one that I know of has been able to purchase the DVD through this site. I purchased my DVD from WGBH in Boston, Massachusetts. They can be contacted at wgbh.org or 617-300-3300. I placed my order by phone and received the DVD in three weeks. The cost of the DVD is $85.00. All DVD's on PBS television are high priced because they remain on the air because of public donations. Often the CDs and DVDs they offer at the time of the concert, go on sale to the public. Sometimes they do not. In Mario's case, Sometimes I Dream was sold to the public. The DVDs of Music of the Night and Acropolis were not made available to the public. The most obvious reason being that they were made for DVD players which play both Region 1 and 2. Most people in the US do not own this type of DVD player. Our DVD players play only Region 1. I purchased a new Windows 8 laptop which I thought would surely play Region 2 DVDs but sadly, it does not. The dual format DVD players are not that much higher priced than Region 1, so I think I will make the investment.
I also did not purchase Nathan Pacheco's DVD from the PBS concert. I made another mistake. It will not be available to the public.
So, if you want your favorite artists on DVD from PBS, it's best to open your pocketbook and pay the additional fee. Not only will you have the enjoyment of the concert but you will help guarantee that classical crossover continues to be shown on PBS. They clearly announced during one of the donation intermissions that they only repeat a concert if it does well with the viewers (monetarily). Otherwise, the host said they move into other directions. So, clearly money is what keeps our only US source of classical crossover music available!
