Recently I spent time listening to Jeanette MacDonald on Youtube. I'm amazed. THAT HIGH NOTE at the end of "Italian Street Song" in Naughty Marietta is so looong! That particular song is HARD. Four quick high Cs at the end. And her voice was really full and rich. I'd love it if I was as good as that. (When I try to sing any of Marietta's arias, it goes like this: "Zing, zing, zizzy, zizzy, zing, boom, ay! (very flat.) La, la, la, ha, ha, ha, h-AAARGH!") I only wish I could hit a high C and sound halfway decent, NOT like a strangled cat. (Maybe when I get lessons in bel canto singing and learn to control my voice, which is strong but really uncontrollable.) She had an opera career for a while, too. Apparently she trained for several months and then played Marguerite in "Faust." www.youtube.com/watch?v=UElHgLigwyI Jeanette MacDonald singing "Italian Street Song" (I mentioned her because I've seen Deanna Durbin mentioned on this and the Hayley Westenra International forum, and JMcD is from the same period, with a similar style.)
