on location shoot continues today and tonight at the famed Orpheum Theatre in downtown Los Angeles co-hosting segments for a network television concert special airing coast to coast on PBS in August. This theater is rich with history and is stunningly beautiful. Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland, Jack Benny, Ella Fitzgerald and many other performers have graced the stage at this landmark.

Jackie Evancho Goes to the Movies for PBS Concert
Her newest 'Great Performances' concert brings classical sound to familiar movie themes.

Young Jackie Evancho went to the fabled Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles last night and sang music from the movies as she recorded her second PBS Great Performances live concert.

The sense of spectacle was just as evident at the Orpheum as it was for her first PBS special a little over a year ago at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Fla.

Evident too was the classical crossover genre that marks her vocal style. The difference was that the music at the Orpheum sounded more modern in its themes.

The audience was markedly younger than the crowds who have been filling concert halls across the country the past year for her symphonic tour, “Dream With Me.” Notably younger too were the musicians making up the 26-piece orchestra, led by award-winning composer and arranger William Ross.

Jackie's second PBS special is scheduled to be released in August and will be broadcast by affiliate stations around the country for their fund drives. Last year’s Dream With Me In Concert became one of the most viewed specials in the 38-year-history of the Great Performances series. It raised record amounts of money for PBS stations.

Songs from last night’s “Music of the Movies” concert will also form the core of Jackie’s next full-length album, which is expected out this fall. The official album title has not yet been announced.

The mood and pacing last night were different from a normal concert. Stage manager David Wader, who has managed Academy Awards shows and other major productions, called for Jackie and the orchestra to stop, start and sometimes repeat certain songs according to directions he received from unseen producers and editors who reviewed taped footage as the evening progressed.

The Richland Township star remained ebullient throughout the two hours and 45 minutes of the recording session. While waiting for signals from Wader, she kept the audience charmed with what have become her trademark gestures of hand waves, smiles and sometimes giggles.

In a little less than two years, Jackie has gone from a 10-year-old kid from Pittsburgh who was the runner-up on America’s Got Talent to an ascendant international superstar. She has now released four albums that have sold more than 2 million copies, performed twice for President Obama, appeared twice in concert in Japan, sung twice in Canada, once in England and next week will take her powerful, lyrical soprano voice to Russia where she will help open the St. Petersburg International Economic Summit in Palace Square.

She sang 12 movie-themed songs at the Orpheum, including “Come What May” from the film, Moulin Rouge with her guest stars, the Canadian Tenors.

She brought out another guest to sing “I See the Light” from the Disney film, Tangled, as a duet. She had a lot of time to practice with this partner because it was her 14-year-old brother, Jacob. Last January, they sang a capella together at a concert in Indio, Calif. Brother Jake turns out to have a resonant voice and excellent pitch. Singing with his sister and a top-flight orchestra, he turned in a crowd-pleasing performance.

The Orpheum Theatre opened in 1926; stars appearing there have included Charlie Chaplin, Jack Benny, Ella Fitzgerald and Stevie Wonder. It is where Judy Garland began her career in 1933.

An enormous hall with ornate carvings in a golden hue, the theater last night saw its stage dressed with simple columns and curtains rising several stories against a backdrop of an inky black sky and bright stars.

The set was simple yet elegant, and lighting created many different moods. A low circular dais, maybe two feet high and about 10 feet across, was the stage within the stage for Jackie’s songs. She sang them all with a hand-held mic.

She wore three different dresses throughout the night in pastel hues of gold, blue and rose, with matching shoes and modest-sized heels. Singing “The Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera, she evoked the phantom by appearing in a black tux jacket with pink piping and close-fitted black trousers and black wedge shoes.

“Music of the Movies” seems not so much a departure from the classical crossover style so prevalent in Dream With Me as an effort to evolve from that album’s emphasis on arias in other languages to more familiar melodies. All but one are in English and may appeal to younger audiences.

In its simplest definition, classical crossover finds ways to make classical music more popular and popular music more classical. The genre suits the sonorous timbre, soaring range and astounding power of Jackie’s voice. And it is a genre suited to evoking moods in films.

Ever since European classical musicians began putting music to films starting in the 1930s, the movie theater has been the one place where Americans have heard classical crossover music, even if they didn’t know what to call it.

“Jackie is singer who is making classical music popular. You don’t see other American artists doing that, and she is only 12,” said one concert-goer last night.

Producer David Foster, with 16 Grammies to his credit, produced Dream With Me with his well-known wall-of-sound effect—a symphony orchestra of 40 musicians or so who were furnished with lush arrangements.

He anchored the Dream With Me concert with elaborate sets, a virtuoso pianist for one number, original lyrics for another piece by Lara Fabian, and the pairing of Jackie with Barbra Streisand and Scottish classical crossover artist Susan Boyle.

These trappings are gone in Jackie’s latest musical venture.

The new arrangements remain posh, and an outstanding violinist and trumpeter take center stage with Jackie on two different numbers.

But executive producer and director David Horn, co-producer Umberto Gatica and conductor/arranger Ross seem to be saying that the little girl from Richland Township has graduated to a place where her voice and interpretive skills can capture an audience on their own now.

They may also be wondering whether the evolution toward more familiar music will find its way onto the radio. For much of the country, Jackie remains the most famous singer they have never heard because American radio slices and dices music by genre, then assigns advertising accordingly.

Classical Crossover remains largely left out of the picture.

Only time will tell what this next move means in a young career whose trajectory can be reasonably described as meteoric. Late last night in Los Angeles, however, as the hour approached 11 pm on a mid-week night, she dedicated the last song to her mother for allowing her daughter to “follow my dream”.

As she sang “Reflection” from Disney’s Mulan, the Orpheum’s audience sat without stirring, smiles plastered on faces, and jaws agape.

Jackie Evancho once again was making magic happen.

Reflection is not an easy song to sing. It will be interesting to compare Jackie's interpretation with the original from Christina Aguilera, the budding artist at the time who recorded it for the movie Mulan, marking the beginning of her rise to stardom. Christina is yet another standout artist from the Pittsburgh area. Must be sometime in the water.



Christina had to audition for the part by demonstrating she could hit high E above middle C.

Here's my take:

Jackie Evancho: Music of the Movies

It’s almost 2 am here in Ventura County. I got back a short while ago from a wonderful performance by Jackie at the LA Orpheum Theater. I was unable to make the JEFC fan gathering at Unami Deli, I left too late for LA and had to contend with the 101 freeway traffic in Calabasas. I did meet JEFC fan Jerry Hunt who was generously given a ticket by Joe Merkt. I was in row J about 25 feet away from the stage and I didn’t need to use my opera glasses.

The show started about 8:10 pm with the Canadian Tenors; normally a quartet, but now a trio due to one member’s absence due to illness. They sang:
We Believe,
Hallelujah, and
Adagio.

They sang very nice renditions of all three songs.

Then Jackie came on and started off with Pure Imagination. Here is the sequence of songs:

1) Pure Imagination: very well done and it’s the best rendition I’ve ever heard of this song.

2) Can You Feel the Love Tonight: again very nicely done.

3) Some Enchanted Evening: loved it. I recall that in her song introduction she said that this song reflected how she would like to feel about her first love. Awwww, she growing up so fast!

4) What a Wonderful World: loved it.

5) My Heart Will Go On: first standing ovation (SO) and first retake. Caroline Campbell, a beautiful violinist, accompanied her and they performed beautifully. There were also some teleprompter retakes of the intros for a couple of the previous songs.

6) The Summer Knows: Jumaane Smith (trumpet) started off with a solo that was cut for an instant retake, but he’s about as good as Chris Botti. I loved it.

7) I See the Light: big surprise; duet with Jacob. SO with retake (Jacob started off just a tad early in a later part of the song). Love them both, Jacob has a really good voice in my opinion.

8) Cinema Paradiso, Love Theme (Italian Lyrics): I thought she was just great.

9) The Music of the Night: SO & Loved it.

10) When I Fall in Love: Loved this too.

11) Come What May: Sung with the Canadian Tenors and they sounded great together.

12) Reflection: Fabulous with SO, but needed a retake. There was a change to the arrangement. In the interlude, Jackie was given a water bottle with straw to drink, but choked on a piece of paper from the straw; had to wipe off some water that she sprayed out.

After the last take of Reflection Jackie was given a long standing O and came back a couple of times to take her bows. Jerry Hunt looked up in the balcony and thought he saw David Foster exiting. The performance ended about 10:50 pm.

All in all, it was a wonderful evening. I think the album and the DVD of this performance will be well worth our money. Good Night All.

After an overnight stay, breakfast and a two-hour drive return trip from LA, my wife and I returned so I could access my computer and add some quick observations.

1. Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!!! And, this is our third time seeing Jackie.

2. Many Jackie programs should be held in theaters as beautiful and historic as the Orpheum.
The theater seating was extremely intimate and row J afforded incredible close-up views of Jackie. I sat among a number of Jackie fans including Handyman to my right, Anwaar behind my wife; and Sandra, Frank and many fans members one or two rows in front.

3. In a way, I wish our spoilers won't detract from the wonder of the to-be-aired PBS show. Take solace. The final show will be a compilation of PBS footage. The dress rehearsal was taped, and some will be used in the aired show. I understand additional non-audience footage was filmed. Before the theater doors opened, a line grew. A PBS camera crew filmed theater-goers in the line entering the theater. Inside the lobby, a PBS cameraman and reporter were filming on-the-spot interviews prior to and after the show. I saw some fan members being interviewed. Perhaps we will see them on PBS or the "Making of the Show" DVD.

4. Surprise after surprise. Jackie wore a black pants suit for the singing of the Phantom song "Music of the Night." Jake appearing and the brother-sister duet "I See the Light" from the movie Tangled. The stage manager looked and sounded familiar. Yes, he was in the YouTube video "DWMIC Behind the Scenes @ 5:23 "Go get 'em kiddie."

5. More to report later. A little tired right now. What a night!! What a great show!!

I posted this in basic form over on Amazon last night, then added some edits. Overall, it was fantabuloso. :lol:

Initial Review - Orpheum

13-14 June 2012

The pre-concert meeting at Umami (a "classy hamburger joint") that was so kindly arranged by Ian. Great food, GREAT company. Got to visit again with Jackie fans, some who'd come great distances. Joe M (e.g.) had flown in from Nashville on the morning of the concert & was planning to take the redeye back; he was planning to be back at work today (Thursday). Now THAT'S dedication!

This change in genre is somewhat risky for Jackie, but she's doing it anyway. There should be at least a promotional tie-in to TCYK, & many of us are still hoping she can sing an original song for the movie. The wife initially said it's "not her genre" - she should stick to more classical material. We should all judge that for ourselves.

Jackie's voice continues to become more powerful by leaps & bounds. Her low notes are richer & more rounded, & after a bit of initial nervousness she still just nails her high notes. Her pitch control is outstanding; you have to listen really, really hard to pick up a minor mistake here & there. She's noticeably better than she was in the past, & far, far better than most professional singers.

Jackie's musical producers STILL sometimes have a tendency to include too much orchestral fol de rol (JMHO; Ehzu's word), not allowing her voice to shine unaccompanied. But this is a minor complaint. Maybe it'll be "fixed" when the DVD comes out, or maybe pa1189 can work his magic to bring out her voice.

Most, but not all, the songs got standing O's from the fans in attendance. There was a relatively long initial delay as they moved people from the balcony down; for some reason there were a number of empty seats up front. Why they couldn't have computerized their sales to fill the hall in the desired order is UTTERLY beyond me. This made the hall perhaps ~85% full??? -IDK.

The show began with 3 of the 4 Canadian Tenors - one was ill. They sang an Italian song i didn't recognize, then Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, then a song they said was adapted from Adagio for Organ (didn't mention the composer - perhaps it was Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G minor), again with Italian lyrics. They received a monderately enthusiastic response.

I admittedly was bit disappointed with the Tenors, though they're polished performers. I don't hear the vocal depth that Josh Page has, though in a setting like this Josh might have been nervous again, & his performance might have suffered. All in all, going with the Tenors may have been the proper conservative decision, but i still like Josh a lot (JMHO). Perhaps it was hearing some Alfie Boe & Il Divo recently; the Canadians don't quite match up. (again, JMHO!)

Since it was being recorded for PBS, Jackie ended up having to do several songs twice. She was also trying to read off a teleprompter to introduce each song, & flubbed her lines repeatedly, necessitating multiple repeats & start-overs. We didn't really mind, though, just laughed along with her, told her we loved her, & she got thru them.

Jackie began with Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka, dressed in a very frilly long cream-colored dress. (Please forgive my fashion ignorance. I'll just try to describe them with my limited vocabulary & let someone more knowledgeable provide further details.) It was pretty but not truly inspired, & the crowd didn't come to its feet.

She moved on to Elton John's Can You Feel the Love Tonight (from The Lion King), then Some Enchanted Evening (Rodgers & Hammerstein, from South Pacific), when she mentioned that that might be the way she'll someday meet her 1st love. I personally thought these were outstanding renditions by Jackie & she put her all into them, but evidently the crowd didn't agree, giving her enthusiastic ovations but remaining in their seats.

She introduced her next song, What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong, by saying her father did a very poor impression of Satchmo; those lines she flubbed many times before getting them right. It was a gorgeous rendition, & ovations became more enthusiastic.

My Heart Will Go On from Titanic was next, featuring a violin soloist named Caroline Campbell, a lovely blond who stood & gyrated a bit as she played in her backless dress. The wife found her garish & annoying, but i just figured "that's LA for ya". They did the song twice after having a sound problem of some kind. The crowd stood & showed Jackie its enthusiastic appreciation after both versions.

We then had a brief break so Jackie could change into a pale blue dress, & then came The Summer Knows (by Michel Legrand from Summer of '42). It began with a solo by a very fine trumpet player named Jumaane (spelling???) Smith. As a (former) trumpet player myself, let me tell you, this guy was good, perhaps not quite up to Chris Botti's skill - not sure - but very good nevertheless. (Hey, Jackie only works with the best people now.) From here on out, virtually all the songs got standing ovations. Edit: Jumanne Smith is excellent, even compared with Chris Botti. Among other things, Smith backs up Michael Bublé.


Then came one of the highlights of the show, I See the Light from Tangled (based on Rapunzel). Jacob came out wearing a tie, looking very sharp, & sang a beautiful duet with Jackie. That in itself was a huge, pleasant surprise, but the real surprise is that JACOB'S VOICE APPEARS TO BE CHANGING! Big time. It almost sounds like he's headed for baritone territory. That didn't seem to reduce their "blood harmony" though, because they sounded fantastic together. Jacob had some minor flubs with the lyrics, so they had to do the song twice, but that was just doubled pleasure for the audience.

Jackie then changed into something we've NEVER seen her in before, kind of a black pants suit (again, please forgive my fashion ignorance!), singing the Cinema Paradiso theme by Ennio Morricone. The wife liked this the most, saying it was "cassical" sounding - but i just think it was because the lyrics are in Italian (Jackie's only song tonight in perhaps her favorite singing language). Lovely.

Then came another highlight, Music of the Night, introduced by a brief recapping of the Phantom story from when she was 7 & a brief tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Jackie delivered a powerful version, putting her emotion into it. She sounded a bit hesitant on the high note (??Ab5; Jackie's "favorite high note") the 1st time thru, but absolutely nailed it the 2nd time. Fantabuloso, Jackie. The roof will be needing repairs after Jackie tore it off.

She then changed back into a more typical (for her) frilly pink dress & sang When I Fall in Love (Young & Heyman, from One Minute to Zero), a song recorded by Doris Day, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mathis, The Carpenters, Kenny Rogers & Celine Dion (among many others). Jackie was very good, but the song may not quite suit her yet (too jazzy/bluesy??)

I didn't expect much from Come What May from Moulin Rouge, but Jackie sang it with the Canadian Tenors, & WOW they sounded fantastic together. Another major highlight that brought the house down (again). Edit: The Canadian Tenors really shone here, making up for their earlier so-so songs.

Jackie's last song was Reflection from Mulan, which gave Christina Aguilera her big break. Jackie dedicated it to Lisa for helping her follow her dreams, a very moving tribute to a wonderful mother. It was another triumph, but she did have to repeat it due to some type of sound problem. She was probably pretty tired by the end, & will be singing in Russia in only a week; let's hope she can quickly get acclimated to the time zone changes.

Parenthetically, they had threatened to confiscate cell-phones & video recorders, but didn't; the logistics of that would have been daunting. We were on the honor system. I didn't see anyone surreptitiously video recording, but a few took photos.

There unfortunately was no encore, but a long, enthusiastic standing ovation resulted in many curtain calls & multiple curtsies, double waves & thanks to the crowd. All in all a very moving, satisfying experience. Even the wife, who was very skeptical at 1st, being more of a traditional classical fan, was favorably impressed. I loved it. Jackie brought me to tears several times (& the wife too!).

I wanted to stay & visit with fans, but the wife said we had to check on our 18 year old dog. She said we'll "DEFINITELY see these people again"! Probably true.....

Greetings, Jackie fans,

It was great to see familiar faces and meet other fans last night.

This is the wife of PeabodySherman, posting for the first time. Usually my husband does all the posting here, but after Jackie’s stellar performance, I too felt compelled to comment.

I have loved “Pure Imagination” ever since the jazz version by Bob James on his “BJ4” album in 1977. So, I really looked forward to Jackie’s interpretation. And she performed it beautifully! The lyrics set the right tone for a show highlighting the magic, wonder, and inspiration of movies and movie music.

Jackie’s white dress sparkled here and there just as she did throughout the evening.

She performed “My Heart Will Go On” very movingly and was ably accompanied by a talented violinist.

Jackie was so cute and charming in her black pantsuit during two songs. She sang “Cinema Paradiso” in Italian and was a joy to hear! That was a highlight for me, and initially that was my favorite. But then, Jackie next sang “Music of the Night,” which became my absolute favorite of the night. Wasn’t she marvelous? She deservedly received a standing o. And what a treat for the audience to hear it a second time! How lucky were we?! We were also fortunate to hear Jackie perform three other songs twice!

I enjoyed Jackie’s rendition of “The Summer Knows.” At first, I thought the trumpet intro was a little loud for this dreamy song. (On this same tune, Dave Koz plays a saxophone on his “At the Movies” CD, and I guess I was used to that sound.) But, hearing it performed again, I thought it worked well. So glad Jackie included this lovely song.

Finally, I was impressed by the orchestra, the Orpheum Theatre and its decorative interior, and the backdrop, design and varied lighting of the stage. The ambience and setting proved to be another great venue to showcase Jackie and her phenomenal talent.

I look forward to August and the airing of this special.
