Definitely not for a professional musician's publication. Nevertheless, many listeners agree with Mr. Barnes, professional or not. More training for any singer is not a bad thing.

My opinion is ..... yes. He is. The basic criteria whether for food or restaurant ambience or lack of it or a musical performance is near the same. The fact that his critique is published in a newspaper in a city just across the river (Hudson) from the NY state capitol of Albany .... I'd say he carries some weight; some influence with readers on that side of upState. It will be noticed. No apparent axe to grind. He's not some Amazon crank or Youtube troll who'll pan Jackie for just about anything. Like I say. I've never read anything published about her like that before. Imo. She should heed it.

Thanks ben and kari. Wow. That's the first Jackie concert, panned by a "real" critic, that I've ever read. It's one that Jackie and company should pay are are very probably paying close and strict attention to. That's a head snapper. A wake up call. To whole heartedly quote a BG ..... "yikes". Hopefully not demoralizing, but taken as part of the learning curve. Time to make adjustments ... perhaps attitudinally as well as materially. Sounds like Jackie needs some Foster type coaching ... if not from the master himself. Arranging, editing, backup and musical direction. Not time to give up or take time off. You dust yourself off, climb back on and keep peddling. It's not over until the fat lady sings. And Jackie's looks she's got a long way to go to "fat". The writer, Steve Barnes, is a restaurant critic: www.timesunion.com/stevebarnes/
In my opinion, Jackie's perfomances are her best when she is working with David Foster. "Lacking an apparent interpretive style or emotional connection to the material", says the food connoisseur. More than anything, it is the opposite of that statement that won me as a fan, or I wouldn't know what I'm doing here. Maybe he is qualified to know, but that doesn't remind me of the Jackie I listen to. Have things changed? I've never seen her perform, but that doesn't seem like the consensus of opinion of those who have, either.

I've never seen her perform, but that doesn't seem like the consensus of opinion of those who have, either. I've only been able to see one of her concerts in person, at Chautauqua, NY, 2 Augusts ago. For the benefit of a Jackie fan who lives on the other side of the world from where I'm writing this, Chautauqua Institution is a very famous Victorian era resort for mostly old money, WASP New Yorkers. While located on the far western side of NY state it draws wealthy residents from every corner including Manhattan, who come there to cottage; attend college level lectures and concerts by classy performers like Jackie in a beautiful, architecturally quaint, lakeside village environment. She had that very sophisticated (except me and my wife), normally hard to please audience of 5000 standing on their seats going wild after nearly every song she sang. I was a brand new fan after stumbling on her Youtube videos. Taken, like you, by her "interpretive style and emotional connection with the material." I have been to many concerts over my many years. But never, until then, had I witnessed a connection with an audience of the kind Jackie made that night. That's why it concerns me that a professional New York newspaper critic, whether of restaurants or bag pipe players or singers like Jackie and with no apparent axe to grind ...... pans her. When a New York critic doesn't like what they hear or see about a performance ... it's time to listen up. Now. Here's the thing. May appear to contradict what I've just written. But I personally and as a fan don't care what a critic's opinion about Jackie is. I often go to and love movies that critics hate. I'm a fan of Jackie the person and performer ... for life. If Jackie never sang another note of music after tomorrow, I would believe I've heard the most beautiful singing voice God ever blessed anyone with and was in the presence of one of His loveliest creations.
