I wondered what the concert visual effects looked like in a live performance. It came over on television so bright that you couldn't even see Sarah clearly. This was true of every song on the album. The only songs which showed her clearly were Phantom of the Opera and Deliver Me.

Pecanpraline:
I concur with your previous post in that I found this concert less than what I expected. I did not care much for the music and the visual affects were rather overwhelming. About half way through the concert I simply could not take anymore of the razzle dazzle. I thought Josh Grobans concert which followed Sarah's was a better performance as he gets right into his audience. I waited until 10PM that same evening to watch a bit of Jackie's concert which I have seen before and own the dvd plus coping the origal airing on PBS on my dvrd. Surprisingly I watched the entire concert. The only comment I would make about Jackie's concert was the PBS local hosts really do not know Jackie, and do not understand what opera or CC is about. Perhaps they would be more suited to a PBS sponsored and hosted outdoor fishing derby.

It just occurred to me that that recording of Sarah's concert was the one I was at. I could see Sarah very clearly and the lights and special effects were so, so beautiful. Shame it didn't come across on TV. There are some songs from her new album I don't like, but the first three she performs (Angel, Day Like This, Glosoli) are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! I was super happy when I was there.

IMO the taping was not well done. I, too, was disappointed in the concert as shown. While the "razzle-dazzle" did not bother me much, it is true that Sarah was never presented well, at least during the "Dreamchaser" part of the program, which was a good deal of the show. When the camera moved the coverage up close enough to see her, the microphone was positioned over much of her face or the bottom half of it. To me, it made it appear that she was "lip-syncing" on her "Dreamchaser" material and was not doing a good job of it (hence the camera being used to perhaps try to hide that since "lip-syncing" is not viewed well here in the US).
Although interviewed during the pledge breaks by PBS personnel, she never really discussed her upcoming space voyage or much of why this material was of interest to her. They had not done their homework on her and, when given the opportunity to fill them (and the viewer) in on what was going on with her, she either did not do it or they cut it out.
Her live concert performances continue to get good reviews, so I hope those good reviews continue throughout her N. America tour schedule, which starts this fall. This was the first PBS special of hers that I have seen that did not do her justice.

She wasn't lip synching on the night. 100% sure of that. I was only feet away from her. x

Just for a bit of trvia, but Sarah used a huge lyric screen behind the audience. The only songs it showed the lyrics for were the Dreamchaser ones. There was one exception... Hijo De La Luna.

I haven't been to a live concert in a long time. Is it normal for artists to read the lyrics of their songs?

I haven't been to a live concert in a long time. Is it normal for artists to read the lyrics of their songs? It's not usual in my experience, but I have seen it where the concert is televised, or sometimes if the artist is singing a piece for the first time in public. But Sarah's event wasn't so much a 'concert' as a filming session with an audience.

I think it's actually more frequent than the audience realise. The screens are normally on stage on the floor by the lighting. They are just there for fall back on if the singer's brain freezes for a moment or two. Happens to all artists at some point, no matter how professional, so I think it's just a safety net. The lyrics didn't appear for any Sarah's usual repertoire.
I was present when it happened to Hayley Westenra once. An audience member shouted out the lyrics to her. She thanked them and carried on (thankfully she was accompanying herself on piano so it was easy for to stop and start again).

Dear Sarah's fans. I'd really like to know what song of hers is used in this video. It doesn't really have words, so it's hard to look for it. Maybe you could help out... Thanks! www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UqVi6Sxcvs

Sarah's twitter references this review of her tour concert as published in the Toronto Sun. It is a good review, but I found it interesting that the criticism mirrors some of the same issues that posters here mentioned regarding the PBS show.www.torontosun.com/2013/09/16/sarah-brightmans-air-canada-centre-show-is-out-of-this-worldBTW, it appears that she is close to a sell-out for her performance scheduled to be at Radio City Music Hall, with only a few single seats still showing as available.
