Excerpts from Nielsen & Billboard's Music Industry Report
Year...Overall...% Chg....Classical....% Chg
2008....535........NA........13.3.........NA
2009....490.......-8.5.......12.1.......-8.9%
2010....443.......-9.5.........9.0......-26%
2011....458......+3.2%......9.6.......+6.8%
2012....450.......-1.8%......7.5......-20.5%
All figures are in millions
Overall - Overall album sales (including TEA), all genres
Classical - Classical album sales (not including TEA)
TEA - Track Equivalent Albums where 1 track equals 1/10 of an album
% Chg - Percentage change from previous year
Overal music industry sales are down from 2008 to 2012 but classical sales are down a lot more. This is the reality that all classical and CC musicians, producers and labels must contend with. The report for 2013 should be out in Jan 2014 - we will see how the industry and the classical genre fared this year.
The reports contain a lot of good information. If I have misinterpreted any numbers, please feel free to correct me.
