Last night I saw Faryl live for the first time, at my local theatre in Epsom. She was performing as a guest artist with the International Harp Ensemble - a mixed group with over thirty harps played by all ages from primary school to pensioners.
Faryl sang seven songs : -
The Rose
O Mio Babbino Caro
Silent Night (as a duet with a young male singer)
Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod - beautifully accompanied by solo harpist Luisa-Maria Cordell, founder of the ensemble, who conducted for the rest of the evening)
Hallelujah (The Leonard Cohen tune, but with different words written in memory of a child who had died from cancer)
Danny Boy
and the encore O Holy Night
This video features Faryl and the ensemble in rehearsal

The recordings don't sound great.

Maybe it's better as a memory of the evening than as an album in its own right.

I have just returned from seeing the International Harp Ensemble with Faryl Smith at Poole. I can only say it was a magical evening with some amazing arrangements and sounds. A slight change with the normal set to tie in with St. David's Day with the inclusion of Calon Lan in the second set and also an addition to the first set with the singing of As I Survey the Wondrous Cross. This was sung following a recording the Ensemble and Faryl made recently for Songs of Praise and will be shown later this year on September 8th.
Tonights Full Set List Celtic Medley O'Carolan's Concerto / Eleanor Plunkett / Planxty Drew Isabella Burke Solo Items The Rose - with Faryl Smith Canon The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba O Mio Babbino Caro - with Faryl Smith As I Survey the Wondrous Cross - with Faryl Smith Habanera Gris 'He's a Pirate' from Pirates of the Caribbean Cold Play Medley Take Five Fancy Shuffle Ave Maria - with Faryl Smith Hallelujah - with Faryl Smith Calon Lân - with Faryl Smith Chaconne Nigun Atik Danny Boy - with Faryl Smith
It was quite amazing seeing the concentration on the younger members of the ensemble, especially the 8-10 year olds. Some very talented youngsters on stage. Faryl was her usual brilliant self and sang beautifully on all of her seven songs.
Now that I have heard them live, I have to agree that the album, though good, does not compare with a live performance, and I can see what Nicola means by saying the sound on the album is not particularly good (though it's better with headphones Nicola).
Recommended for something a little different. And please go if you get the chance. Only disappointment of the evening was seeing a theatre only about 20% full. Unbelievable. Though the audience participation was more than positive and there was no sign of any disappointment from Faryl and Luisa when I had a chat with them following the concert. I think Faryl is more concerned with her upcoming 'A' Levels!!!
