I posted this comment to Mr. Munro's review:
Thanks to Mr. Munro and The Fresno Bee for excellent coverage of this exciting young performer's Fresno concert with the excellent Fresno Grand Opera orchestra. Mr. Munro's review was honest, sympathetic and knowledgeable - few newspaper critics have made an effort to really inform themselves about this singer. Mr. Munro was generous in acknowledging that most of the audience was enthusiastic and joyful about her performance, and he praised Ms. Evancho's talent, personality, warmth and sincerity. Jackie Evancho is performing in the big leagues, and that includes being reviewed in the same way that other big-league performers are reviewed. She doesn't want to be treated as a "child performer", and so Mr. Munro gave her the respect of rendering a fair and honest review.
I am one of those many people who find Jackie Evancho's voice thrilling to listen to. I hear that her vocal production betrays various technical imperfections, but they do not, for me, obscure that very thrilling sound at its core. I think that her technique has been improving every year, and so I am hopeful that she will be even more polished in the future, without losing that uniquely beautiful sound. And as for the "performance habits" or affectations that we fans find endearing, but that detract from her performance for many others: you only get to be a platinum-selling pre-teen once in your life - so we say: jump, clap and break character if you like, Jackie! She'll grow out of that.
