What, no thread for Izzy? There is now!
Izzy was one of the first of the current generation of classical crossover artists to come to my attention. My wife and I saw Izzy sing 'Be still my soul' at the Songs of Praise Big Sing in 2003. That prompted us to look for her albums; we didn't really know where to look then, but we found her in the Classical section and bought Ascolta. We played it from time to time over the ensuing years (it was never one to lie forgotten at the back of the drawer) but I don't remember ever seeing any more of Izzy in the media.
So when I started buying more music last year, Izzy was one of the names that I looked for; 'New Dawn' and 'Libera Me' were soon added to my collection. I must admit that I don't play 'Libera Me' so often but Ascolta and 'New dawn' are quite regular visitors to my CD player.
Izzy sings beautifully (I know I say that about a lot of artists, but it's true in every case ). There is sometimes a slightly hard edge to her voice, but Izzy uses this to bring a sense of passion and authority to her performances. You may not always understand the language, but you cannot ignore the lyrics when Izzy sings.
I had thought until recently that Izzy was a performer from the past, and didn't really expect to find anything new from her . Then up popped Cancion .
I think this is the only classical crossover album I have which is performed entirely with a single guitar accompaniment, but it works surprisingly well across the wide range of musical styles embodied in the album. Much of the mood is fairly tranquil but there are moments of Spanish fire and passion. Izzy's performance of 'Les filles de Cadiz' rivals Natasha Marsh's version in my opinion.
If you are already an Izzy fan, I don't think you will be disappointed with Cancion.
If you do not know her music, then you are missing out on a remarkable talent.
