Review by Mathew Jefferson: Jackie Evancho (feat. Peter Kiesewalter) 7/25/2015 LIVE @ the SMF Review written by Matthew Jefferson (pianist, author of the eBook "How the Rainbow Hearts Form as One," and a fan of Jackie Evancho).
Phenomenally Entertaining! It was a beautiful day outside, and a whole crowd came to see the show. Pie and ice cream stands, outdoor "tailgating" barbecues and fan gatherings were taking place. The mansion by the pavilion (AKA: the Virginia house) had a big ballroom with a Kawai piano in it. And the dining room was as big as the Hogwart's Great Hall. I arrived at the venue around 7:10 PM on 7/25/2015. I had plenty of time to explore the place. I walked up three steps to the ballroom in the mansion. That Kawai upright piano (with the lid left open) kept me busy for a few minutes. I played "Memories" "...all of my memories keep you near..." , "Music of the Night" (from Andrew Loyd Webber's "The Phantom of the Opera"), "Bring Him Home" from "Les Misérables" "God on high, hear my prayer, in my need..." , and "Don't Cry for me Argentina" (from Andrew Loyd Webber's "EVITA") "...Don't cry for me Argentina, the truth is I never left you, all through my wild days my mad existence, I kept my promise, don't keep your distance..." . It was about 7:45 PM. I walked under the pavilion and sat in the third row. As I was sitting in the third row, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra played with a lively pianist/conductor (Peter Kieswalter). The first few minutes of the opening song had a similar sound to the musical style of Giorgio Moroder. Ooooooooh, I was so surprised by the blend of strings, keys, synthesizers, and instrumental tracks. I felt as if I was attending one of those Michael W. Smith concerts. The pavilion stage had a Baldwin piano, a string orchestra, a couple laptops, and an AKAI APC key25 (a little piano with 25 keys on it). In a flash, Jackie Evancho (in a blue and orange dress) happily approached onto the stage. Her first song on the program was "Take Me There" (track 4 from the "Awakening" album). "Take Me There" flowed like a river over cotton candy clouds. The song reminded me of the moving clouds in the opening title sequence from "The Neverending Story" (1984). I had one of the best seats under the pavilion. I watched Jackie sing throughout the entire concert. Her beautiful voice, and the emotions expressed, all kept me tuned in. As she sang, I felt as if I was walking on clouds and rainbows in the air, flying with unicorns, and swimming with selkies and seals. ["Song of the Sea" (2014) and many other pop-cultural references are in my mind right now. Sorry. I'm just too happy to tell the story here.]. I also learned a lot from the concert. For instance, I learned that it's always good to have water beside the performer. So if I sing at a venue or at an open mic session, I am going to incorporate what I observed. A little sip or two before singing a song. During the first half of the concert, she sang one of my favorite songs off the "Awakening" album. It was track 7 (Memories). "...All of my memories keep you near. In silent moments, imagine you'd be here..." Awesome awesome awesome as always. ✌ <<Let's take a break and I'll tell you a story for a moment before we proceed with this review. The first time I heard this song was back in September 22, 2014 (a day before the official release date of Jackie Evancho's album "Awakening"). I received a CD copy (a day before the official release) in the mail that afternoon. Track 7 features "Memories," and I really love that song so much. After listening to it a few times, I started to teach myself to play it on piano. I decided to perform a cover version of the song in a student recital on 5/16/2015. There was no sheet music available, and there was no piano book version of "Awakening" anywhere. SheetMusicPlus and MusicNotes didn't have it either. So, I had to improvise. It took me eight months to learn the song. As I listened to the piece, I took notes on the melodies, the chords, and then mentally kept track on certain dynamics in certain sections of the song. Originally, this song was performed by Within Temptation in 2004. During the time of Awakening's release, I looked up the original version of the song. That version was okay, but I like Jackie Evancho's version better because of the soothing sounds and the flowing dynamics. I learned 'her' version for eight months before performing it LIVE on a YAMAHA grand piano in a small black-box theater on 5/16/2015. If it weren't for Jackie Evancho, I would have been struggling to find a piece (other than George Händel's "Keyboard Suite in F Minor HWV 433") to play. It feels great to be inspired by gifted singers with excellent tastes of music. I have been influenced by Jackie since the first half of this decade. And as of now, I continue to be influenced by her. Just type in "Memories (LIVE 2015) [in CinemaScope '55]" on Google or YouTube. You'll come across it with a thumbnail of me playing the piano.>> <<Alright. Let's move on with this review.>> According to the first half of the playlist, she sang two songs from "Phantom of the Opera." "Music of the Night" (track 2 from the "Songs from the Silver Screen" album) and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again." In the second half of the playlist (though we still have several miles left until the end of this review), she sang "Think of Me." "...Think of Me, think of me fondly when we've said goodbye, remember me once in awhile please promise me you'll try..." Towards the end of the first half, she dedicated the song "Je T'Aime" (track 3 from the "Awakening" album) to all her fans who attended the concert (including me). I really appreciate the dedication so much, and the song was so pretty. [The fans are "all family" to her. That's what she said right before she sang it.] Someday, I am going to sing that at open mic night or something. But that's another story. Anyway, moving on... During intermission, one stage supervisor allowed me to see what that little piano was on top of the Baldwin. Earlier, before intermission, I could not tell what it was. As I climbed up the stage for a minute, I saw that the little piano on top of the Baldwin was the AKAI APC key25. I took a photo of that incase I forgot what it was. Eventually, if I ever played at an event like that, I might buy one of those tiny pianos and add a taste to whatever music is being played like Peter Kieswalter did. After climbing down the stage, I could not stop myself from singing bits and pieces of "Je T'Aime" nor "Memories." And while entering the mansion (AKA: the Virginia house) by the pavilion, I quickly entered the big empty ballroom again. All that music made me sing and play that Kawai piano. I was attached to all that music. I played a bit of "Music of the Night" and a bit of "Memories." Then, I quickly returned back to the third row seats under the pavilion. The second half started. During the second half, Jackie approached onto the stage. That time, she had either an orange or green dress on. I could not tell what color it was because I was color blind. And all I could ever pay attention to was the singing, the posture, the way the glitter-sleeved microphone was being held, and the emotional expressions. She opened the second half of the program with the song "Lovers" (10th track from the "Dream with Me" album, and from the movie "House of Flying Daggers" [2004]). ? "There was a field in my own town..." Next, she sang "Ave Maria (gratia plena...)" (Not to be confused with the Franz Schubert "Ave Maria" from Walt Disney's "FANTASIA" [1940] which is extremely different from the Vladimir Vavilov "Ave Maria" on the "Awakening" album). Afterward, she realized that some folks were crying. So, she cheered up the whole crowd with the U2 song "With or Without You." She allowed people to stand up and dance during the song, but only a few people did that. My mother beside me said in my ear that nobody would be able to see if I did what Jackie said. To show Jackie a bit of my effort (though I was not standing), I nodded my head up and down like an African Grey Parrot and gently swung my arms left and right. I also softly sang along during the following "...and you give yourself away, and you give yourself away, with or without you, with or without you..." I felt as if I was in a Frozen Sing-Along session at Disney's Hollywood Studios. I did not think anyone next to me cared, and I did not bother to continue to mouth the lyrics as she sang that song. I could not stop myself from mouthing along so cheerfully. Peter Kieswalter and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra played a rendition of Puccini's "Nessun Dorma." [Going from the key of E major and then later modulating to the key G major (and ending on D Major).] Later in the program, Jackie performed another awesome song called "My Immortal." In fact, prior to attending the concert, I did online research on "Awakening" last year. I noticed that a recording of her cover version of "My Immortal" was featured as a bonus track for the Japanese Blu-Spec CD2 edition of the album. There were a few versions of "Awakening" released. One with only 12 tracks, another with 13 tracks (and "My Immortal" was the 13th track), and another with 18 tracks (the Walmart edition = 12 main tracks + 6 Christmas tracks). "Go Time," another great song I liked on YouTube (though it wasn't added to the concert playlist), was an exclusive bonus feature that came with clothing purchases at Justice Girls Clothing Stores. "...Cause this is the time, So get ready it's go time, Step into the light, Now get ready it's go time..." Anyway, during the first verse and refrain of "My Immortal," she played the piano while singing. Wow, that was my first time watching Jackie play the piano LIVE. That was a special treat for us all. While the song kept on going, she and Peter swapped positions and Jackie continued to sing. I love that song. "...if you cry, I'd wipe away all of your tears, if you scream, I'd fight away all of your fears..." After the song was over, she said something like this; "I want you all to close your eyes and think of a tree. And as you do, I will be singing 'Ombra Mai Fu.' If you don't have anything to think about, then you're out of luck." I literally did what she said. My mother beside me said to me way after the show that whatever Jackie said at that moment was a figure of speech. I, however, took Jackie's words too literally. I literally did what Jackie said. That was "my Amelia Bedelia moment." (Here's what I mean by "my Amelia Bedelia moment." Remember the book about the girl who took things literally? And by doing things the way she thinks? That's what I mean by "my Amelia Bedelia moment.") As she sang, and as I closed my eyes, I thought of those cottonwood trees in Redcliffe (Queensland, Australia). Those were the trees I used to climb years ago. As I thought of those trees, I imagined myself sitting on one tree and Jackie sitting on the other tree while singing "Ombra Mai Fu." Before the last two lines of the song, my mother beside me gently tapped on my right arm. I opened my eyes after being distracted by that tap. After that thinking exercise, Jackie sang "Think of Me." "...Think of Me, think of me fondly when we've said goodbye, remember me once in awhile please promise me you'll try..." She ended the concert with "The Lord's Prayer," and I mouthed along with the lyrics. Great song indeed. I wish all churches could have "The Lord's Prayer" be sung during mass. Not often do I hear "The Lord's Prayer" being 'sung' during mass according to my own personal experience. Some priests may have different preferences. The show was over. As people started to leave, I was saying softly (as if I were calling for a lifeboat in the middle of the Atlantic. TITANIC reference), "Wait. Come back. Come back. I wanna hear more from you. I wanna stick around and hear you sing some more. Come back. Come back." But Jackie vanished, and so did the orchestra. Oh well. It was getting late, and everyone was trying to get home and get their rest. I left the pavilion like everyone else, and sang a bit "...and you give yourself away, and you give yourself away, with or without you, with or without you..." and "...if you cry, I'd wipe away all of your tears, if you scream, I'd fight away all of your fears..." People behind me did not mind me singing at all. I went completely high on all the happiness. I felt as if I was Mabel who ate "Beleventeen" bags of smile dip (a reference from "Gravity Falls" [season 1, episode 5: "The Inconveniencing." 2012]). That concert was the best part of my summer. I smiled throughout the entire concert, and my lips became raw. I really enjoyed the concert so much. Thank you, Jackie. ✌ I recommend Jackie to everyone. This is the music that we should be listening to often. To me, this beautiful classical crossover stuff is food for the brain. I'll always be hungry for all that. And check out some other related artists who have the same talent as Jackie Evancho. There's Ava Maha, Katie Marshall, Susan Boyle, Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, Scarlett Quigley, etc etc etc. I hope that Jackie may someday sing with Michael W. Smith in the future. That's my mother's idea by the way. Christian Contemporary artists performing with classical crossover artists. If "The Lord's Prayer" can be sung, then maybe she can sing with Michael W. Smith, Francesca Batistelli, Laura Story, TobyMac, Casting Crowns, MercyMe, and Third Day. It's sad that I don't get to hear Jackie Evancho on local radio as much as these other artists. On 4/9/2014, however, I found a radio station on TuneIn Radio Pro for iOS. It was called KITCFM. That night from 7-9 PM, KITCFM played songs from Jackie and many other classical crossover artists. Oooooh, I am looking forward to some more of Jackie's events and albums. I hope someday, on a future album, she could sing classic hits such as...; "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" (from 'EVITA'), "When I Need You" (from Leo Sayer), "As Time Goes By" (from "Casablanca" [1942]), "The Neverending Story" (from the movie of the same name [the song was originally by Limahl when the film came out in 1984]), "Love Survives" (in the style of Irene Cara & Freddie Jackson, from the soundtrack and movie "All Dogs Go to Heaven" [1989]), maybe "The Flower Duet" (feat. Ava Maha or Katie Marshall), and maybe sing in a trio "We Are Family" (feat. Ava Maha and Katie Marshall) ("We Are Family" was originally from Sister Sledge). ✌✌✌✌✌✌
