Some photos from Mariette's (sadly undersupported) concert at Downend on 13th October
I probably should have used flash for this one.
Whilst I enjoyed hosting Mariette’s concert at Chessington in July, I had many distractions running through my mind. Last night I was able to just sit and revel in the experience of hearing Mariette sing. I don’t suppose it will be too long before I am looking to repeat that experience.
After a long drive from Birmingham (do you want to see pictures of the trains? ) I arrived at the church soon after Mariette and her band members, but too late to help with much of the donkey work with the equipment. So, after a hug from Mariette and a brief greeting, I left the experts to their setting up and departed in search of something to eat.
Returning to the church there was still plenty of time for some photos and a chat with Mariette and the concert organizer Aylwyn.
Having left everything but my camera in the car, I didn't even have pen and paper for any notes, so the set list will remain nothing but a vague memory. I know it included Howard Goodall's 'The Lord is my Shepherd' (aka the Vicar of Dibley theme) and an Ave Maria or two. There were a few songs from Mariette's debut album and at least one (completed just hours previously) destined for her second album.
Overall, my impression was that the material had more mainstream appeal than previous concerts, though still performed in Mariette's inimitable way.
Very nice photos, John. I'm happy to hear there is a second album in the near future. From her music, I always expect Mariette to be dressed in a more neutral colors. I am being picky but I don't really like her dressed in the flashy printed material. But, it's her voice that matters and it is beautiful.
