Something very special is happening this Friday, 13 April. The Heinz History Center, in association with The Smithsonian Institution, presents its 20th Annual History Makers Award Dinner that recognizes Jackie as an honoree in the category Arts and Letters.
Quoting from the Heinz History Center web site: "Five distinguished Pittsburghers will be recognized for their exceptional contributions to the history of Western Pennsylvania, the nation, and the world ."
"The annual black-tie benefit dinner, chaired by Donald J. Heberle, president of BNY Mellon of Pennsylvania, and Daniel K. Fitzpatrick, president and CEO, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware of Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania, and presented by BNY Mellon and Citizens Bank, honors outstanding men and women whose achievements, while rooted in Western Pennsylvania, transcend geographical boundaries."
This prestigious award is one to which every fan in our community can lend our voices in support of one very special young lady who, in the short span of just two years, has set multiple records and made history, not just in her native state, but around the world. Jackie's list of accomplishments is truly amazing, and I believe I am safe in saying, on behalf of Jackie's loyal fans how extremely proud we are of her, and how very happy we are for her entire family who also share in this great honor along with Jackie. I believe I am also safe in predicting that this award is one in what will be a growing list of accolades and honors for Jackie as the world comes to fully grasp the enormity of her talent and her ability to make a positive difference in the lives of people everywhere. We are all privileged to be witness to the unfolding of Jackie's true greatness at the very beginning of what will undoubtedly be a long, successful career. ~WW~
Evancho making history as youngest Heinz History Maker
by Kyle Lawson Staff Writer
While Jackie Evancho is honored as a Heinz History Maker this weekend, she'll be making history as the youngest person to receive the award.
Evancho placed second on NBC's reality talent competition "America's Got Talent" in 2010 with classical/crossover performances beyond her years. The performances went viral and gained the then 10-year-old international fame.
A Richland native, Evancho is one of five Pittsburghers recognized this year for contributions to the history of western Pennsylvania, the nation and the world as part of the Senator John Heinz History Center's 20th Annual History Makers Award Dinner.
By honoring Evancho, the history center is recognizing that "anyone one of us can make history," said Andy Masich, president and CEO of the Heinz History Center. "It doesn't matter how old you are, what color you are, or whether you're a man or woman."
She'll join a distinguished list of award recipients such as August Wilson, Michael Keaton, Willie Stargell, Fred Rogers and George Benson.
"The list goes on and on and on," said Audrey Brourman, fundraising counsel for the history center and co-founder of the history makers program. "Pittsburgh should be very proud."
Making history has become routine for Jackie.
She was one of the youngest singers to perform the national anthem at a Pittsburgh Pirates' game and was named the world's youngest opera singer by the Guinness Book of World Records.
Jackie's mom, Lisa, said she is honored and excited to attend the awards dinner on April 13 but also taken aback by the recognition for her daughter.
"I'm sure there's people out there much more worthy," Evancho said. "All she did was come in second place on a talent competition."
She also has toured the world, recorded an album with producer David Foster and acted in an upcoming film alongside Robert Redford.
And wherever she goes, it seems Pittsburgh is on Jackie's mind.
After advancing to the top 10 of "America's Got Talent," she said, "I also want to thank Pittsburgh because that's where I'm from, and I really, really love Pittsburgh."
