See Jackie Evancho, the tiny performer with a huge voice6:20 PM, Jan. 25, 2012 Jackie Evancho will perform Saturday at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio. Courtesy Photo Written by Judith Salkin Desert Post WeeklyOnce in a generation it seems, a child bursts onto the music scene with a voice that's mature well beyond their years.
Currently, that voice belongs to Jackie Evancho.
The 11-year-old's clear, brilliant soprano has catapulted her into the arena of classical crossover stars that includes Sarah Brightman, Charlotte Church and Hayley Westenra.
At age 10, Evancho was the runner-up on the NBC series “America's Got Talent.” For the finals, she sang “Time To Say Goodbye (Con te partirò)” as a duet with Brightman, who is one of her idols.
When asked by host Nick Cannon about Evancho's future, Brightman said, “She has a very special voice. I want her to preserve it because she is going to have a very special life.”
The Desert spoke to Evancho earlier this month from Los Angeles.
TDS: You're very young — when did you decide you wanted to be a performer?
I think I was 7 when my mother took me to see “Phantom of the Opera,” and when I watched the actors singing with such emotion, it really inspired me. I wanted to be able to sing that way.
What singers inspire you?
Lady Gaga, I listen to a lot of her music. And I recently got to see Celine Dion in Las Vegas. She totally blew my mind the way she owned the songs she sings. I have several of her CDs and voice is so amazing. I love her.
You seem so poised when you're on stage. Where does that come from?
I don't know. I've always been comfortable singing for an audience. It's something that's very deep inside of me. I get a little nervous sometimes, but I love being on stage.
You've recently added acting to your resumé with a role in Robert Redford's “The Company You Keep.” What was that experience like? Do you want to continue acting?
Mr. Redford is such a nice man and he's a great director. To act by his side in my first film was especially exciting for me. But no, I don't think I want to act full time. I think I might like to do something with Disney special or make a movie once in a while that would give me enough time to sing and record, but that's about it.
Where do you think you'd like to be in five years?
I'd like to have a career like Britney Spears. I'd like to be allowed to grow as a performer and see my singing career increase because this is what I want to do for the rest of my life.Jackie Evancho in concertWhen: 8 p.m. Saturday Where: Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, 84245 Indio Springs Parkway, Indio Tickets: $49, $69 Information: (760) 342-5000; fantasyspringsresort.com link--> www.mydesert.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012201250378

comment from YT: Last night I had the distinct privilege to play violin in the orchestra that accompanied the incredibly talented 11-year-old Jackie Evancho at the Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio. Jackie is an amazing artist to hear and behold, displaying such a beautiful pure voice with a wonderful depth and emotion as she sings. I'm the second person just to the right of the harp, on the outside; John Mario Di Costanzo from NYC conducted. :-) Gregorius24 5 minutes ago
